How to Get the Most Out of Speech Teletherapy
Families and caregivers have an important role in promoting their child’s speech and language skills at home and in the community. Telehealth provides a hands-on approach for families living too far away, but in Texas, from therapy services and for those families who prefer to learn alongside their child in their home. Telehealth must be right for your child, and some insurance plans cover it. Our team of licensed speech therapists can evaluate whether your child can learn best through virtual speech therapy.
What Can I Expect From Speech Teletherapy?
Therapy For Life uses Zoom and Google Meet video platforms to provide speech teletherapy. We share our screen with your child, making speech therapy interactive and fun! Here are some helpful tools to help you and your child get ready to learn:
- Appointments: Your speech appointments are conveniently scheduled at the same time every week. This provides the consistency necessary for your child and you to learn.
- Participants: We encourage parents to involve grandparents, extended family, sitters, and any person who spends time with their child in the program. For parents who have scheduling conflicts with their jobs, telehealth can be a perfect alternative.
- Instruction: Some children can participate independently with their parent nearby. This is okay, too! However, when a parent is needed throughout the therapy session, our speech therapists will instruct and guide you.
- Practice makes perfect: Your child’s speech therapist will discuss why current goals are so important and clever ways of practicing newly learned skills naturally at home and when you go into the community.
- We’re on the same page: Our team provides monthly “office consults” through telehealth, too! These office consults are required for minor children and are best practices for ethical considerations and treatment awareness. Our team loves to discuss great progress and speech/language goal changes, and we want to hear needs and challenges parents are experiencing that we may be able to assist with.
- Setting: It helps to establish a quiet place in your home for teletherapy, as free as possible from outside distractions.
- A perfect fit: While teletherapy is suitable for some, it is not a good fit for every child, and we want the very best for your family. Our team of Texas-licensed and certified speech-language pathologists will evaluate your child and discuss best practices for therapy delivery options.
